We know that God is good. While many may question this fundamental fact, we know by experience that God is good all of the time, and all the time, God is good.

Have you questioned the goodness of God lately? I mean, have the circumstances of your life been so heavy, so hurtful, and so hard that even you have questioned God’s goodness. If so, you’re not alone.

There is a constant spiritual attack on this fundamental truth. The enemy of our souls wants us to believe that God is not good. He will use every tool at his disposal to convince us that God is unfair, uninterested, and unkind.

When my son Eddie died, tragically and unfortunately unlovingly, my mind was naturally filled with false thoughts that God wasn’t good. Fortunately, they didn’t last long, but they showed up so quickly and repetitively. Hard and hurtful things can hit so fast that your equilibrium is lost, and you’re unstable in your thought life. It’s common, especially with deep traumatic pain.

Do you remember in the Garden of Eden when the serpent lied to Eve, insinuating that God was not as good as He portrayed Himself? “Has God indeed said…” was the beginning of his attempt to undermine the goodness of God.  He’s such a liar, and often we believe His lies! Lord help us.

The prophet Nahum reminds us of three essential truths about the goodness of God.

Nahum 1:7 (NKJV) “The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.”

First, God is good!

This is the battlefield right here. Your daily spiritual, mental, and emotional health are all tied up in this, “Do you believe it?” You must have this basic fact solidified in your relationship with God.

Jeremiah 29:11–12 (NLT) “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen.”

Next, God is a stronghold in the day of trouble.

Just because God is good doesn’t mean you won’t face problems. No! Troubles come to us all. None of us are immune. God doesn’t promise to keep you from trials but rather support, protect, and deliver you! God is a stronghold like no one else!

Proverbs 18:10 (NLT) “The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.”

Finally, God knows those who trust in Him.

He has promised to sustain those who look to Him! Of course, you feel like you have no trust in difficult times. But God knows you trust in HIm, even in the struggle.

Psalm 55:22 (NLT) “Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.”

The enemy knows that if he can get us to question God’s goodness, he can ultimately bring us to doubt His love for us. Once we start doubting God’s love, it opens doors for other doubts and fears to enter our minds. So we must guard our hearts against this lie that God is not good.

Choose to agree with the ancient prophet of old and declare daily that the Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble as He knows who trusts Him!

Romans 8:28 (NLT) “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”
