God, in His abundant generosity to His Church, has given some men and women in the Church the supernatural ability to teach the Bible in a way that can be understood in its meaning and how to apply it to our lives. This spiritual gift is vitally important in the lives of God’s family. In the power of the Holy Spirit, we need teachers to explain the truth to us and help us apply it powerfully in our lives.
Romans 12:6–8 (NLT) “In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.”
The Christian who teaches is divinely gifted with that unique ability to interpret and present God’s truth in a relatable and understandable way. While the gift of prophecy is God’s ability to proclaim, the gift of teaching is God’s ability to systematically and regularly instruct someone through the Word of God.
We thank God for His teachers within the ministry that can take the hardest of topics and simplify them for us, and through prayer, take God’s Word and shoot it to our hearts for life change!
Jesus was and is the Master Teacher. Teaching was the primary ministry focus of our Savior. The Early Church placed the highest priority on teaching and prayer in the discipleship process.
Luke 24:27 (NLT) “Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.”
Acts 2:42 (NLT) “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.”
Paul, in his epistles, often goes into great detail to explain a biblical truth or doctrine and then shows how it applies to our lives practically. We see this same pattern throughout the New Testament as other teachers like Peter, James, and John also unpack biblical truths for us. This gift of teaching is not just for those who are called to be pastors or elders in the Church but for all of us. As we each study the Bible and grow in our understanding of it, we can use this gift to help others around us understand it.
This is one of the main ways we as Christians can impact our world for Jesus. By being people who understand the Bible and can explain it to those around us, we can be powerful witnesses for the Gospel. So if you have been blessed with this gift of teaching, don’t take it lightly. Use it to build up the body of Christ and to reach those who need to hear the truth explained. It is a powerful spiritual gift that God has given us, and He wants us to use it for His glory.
Do you have the gift of teaching? If so, how are you using it to impact those around you for Christ? Let us know by posting a comment.
