Pastoral ministry is not just another job; it is a calling. Pastoral ministry is not a vocation. Pastoral ministry is not something you take upon yourself.

Pastoral ministry is a calling. It is the high calling of God.

A pastor does not step into ministry lightly. The call of God is the foundation for shepherding His people.

God’s call is not your desire for great things.

God’s call is not your personal ambition.

God’s call is not you calling yourself into ministry!

God’s call is just that, His calling you out of the world for a special, unique ministry to serve His flock, tirelessly and self-sacrificially.

2 Peter 1:10–11 (NKJV) “Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

You need to understand that you are serving because God has called you, not because it seemed like a good idea or you were experiencing difficulties at work, prompting you to try a new job. The certainty of God’s call will keep you strong in seasons of testing, discouragement, and spiritual battle.

This calling is obvious to those around you. It is recognized and affirmed by your church family, elders, and those who live with you.

2 Timothy 1:6 (NKJV) “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”

Others often recognize God’s calling before we fully understand it, and it is strengthened by the prayers and encouragement of those whom God has put in our lives as overseers, elders, and pastors.

Serving in ministry requires humility and dependence on the Lord. There will be moments when you feel stretched thin, when the work is heavy, or when you question your effectiveness. In these moments, return to the assurance of your calling. God has not given you a spirit of fear, “but of power and of love and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). He will provide what you need as you continue to trust Him and remain faithful to your calling.

Stay grounded in prayer. Continue to grow in God’s Word. Allow your calling to shape your daily decisions as you serve God’s people. The call of God on your life is a gift, and it is also a responsibility. Walk in it with gratitude, humility, and confidence, knowing that God is the One who has called you, and He is faithful to complete the work He has started in you.
