Faith, Uncertainty, and Learning to Trust God Anyway

By January 23, 2026Ministry

What will the Lord do next in my life? I’m so grateful we get to ask that question, even though it may stir up a little anxiety about what He will exactly do! Uncertainty and faith seem to hang out together.  We want to walk by faith, but worry has a way of messing it all up!

The Bible gives us a clear and encouraging definition of faith in Hebrews 11:1. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Faith is not wishful thinking or positive thoughts trying to cover up our fears. No, faith is confidence in God Himself. It is a settled trust in His character, His promises, and His faithfulness, even when we don’t understand what He is doing in the moment. Our faith is not anchored in what happens, but rather in a Person: Jesus Christ! Maybe that is a big mistake you’ve been making for a while, allowing circumstances to cloud your vision of the Lord.

Remember, God knows exactly what He is doing with your life. While it may seem confusing right now and you are unsure about the future, God is not.

The prophet Isaiah reminds us that God declares the end from the beginning. Jesus demonstrated this same confidence when He asked His disciples questions, even though He already knew what He would do. The Lord often invites us to trust Him more deeply, not because He lacks direction, but because He wants to grow our faith.

Second Peter tells us that God has already given us everything we need for life and godliness through knowing Him. We don’t need something or someone more than Jesus.  It’s not strategies and plans, but faith and trust that will get you through. Life is found in Him.

If we want our faith to grow, time in God’s Word is a non-negotiable. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. A daily commitment to reading the Bible shapes how we think, pray, and respond to life.

If you are struggling with where to begin, let me help you.

  1. Wisdom: Read a chapter of Proverbs a day. There are 31 chapters, one for every day of every month. Double up on months that end on the 30th. This will plant God’s solid wisdom in your heart and mind.
  2. Worship: Read the psalms, as many as you like. This will stir up a worshipful heart in you.
  3. Walk: Read the gospels. Start with John, then Mark, then Luke, then Matthew. Follow along the life of Jesus as if you are with him on the dusty roads of Israel. As you follow him, you will learn how to walk in Him.

Hebrews 11 is filled with examples of ordinary people who trusted God in real and often super-challenging circumstances. They believed in God and acted on that belief. God has always worked through ordinary people because that is all He has to work with. Jesus is always on the lookout for hearts that are willing to trust Him.

As you think about the year ahead, or even this next big season in your life, consider the areas of your life where your faith needs to grow. Maybe it’s related to your family, your finances, your health, or decisions you need to make. God already knows what concerns you, and He cares deeply about you. When we bring those things to Him, faith replaces anxiety, and trust begins to take its place. The Bible reminds us that faith pleases God, and even the smallest of faith steps matter so much to Him, and to you.

There are great things ahead. Trust Him!
