It’s hard to visit someone who is very sick or close to death. The whole situation is challenging. There is fear, sadness, and overall pain when someone we love is sick. Jesus experienced something very similar when he came to the house of Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. Great pain has swallowed up this family, and in the delay of Jesus’ arrival, Lazarus dies (John 11)

There are three things to remember when encouraging a sick and dying person.

First, remember that when you visit (like a home, convalescent home, or hospital), the person is alive. Treat them as the person they are. Even if they are unable to respond, speak to the person beyond the sickness.

Next, remember to speak to the family that is near.  They, too, need encouragement, and the Lord will give you what you need to encourage them.

Finally, remember to pray with the person and read the Bible to them. Filling the room with the word of God is powerful! Often, God will give you a specific verse to share or a section to read. Many of the psalms are encouraging.

If you don’t know where to turn in the BIble, here are some suggestions:

Psalms

  1. Psalm 23 – A comforting reminder of God’s presence and guidance.
  2. Psalm 46:1-3 – Assurance of God as a refuge and strength.
  3. Psalm 91 – A declaration of God’s protection and care.

New Testament

  1. John 14:1-3 – Jesus comforts His disciples, promising a place in His Father’s house.
  2. Romans 8:38-39 – Assurance that nothing can separate us from the love of God.
  3. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 – God is the source of all comfort.

Other Encouraging Verses

  1. Isaiah 41:10 – A promise of God’s support and strength.
  2. Matthew 11:28-30 – Jesus invites the weary to find rest in Him.
  3. Revelation 21:4 – A vision of a future without pain or sorrow.

It’s wonderful that you’re in their lives to help and encourage.  Keep stepping into these challenging situations. The Lord is using you greatly!

Psalm 86:5–7 (NKJV) “For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You. Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; And attend to the voice of my supplications. In the day of my trouble I will call upon You, For You will answer me.”
