Pastor, your heart matters. You are called to reflect the heart of Jesus as you care for His people. It’s amazing to me how many men stop paying attention to their own hearts in the ministry.
Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV) “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.”
God’s heart for His flock is abundantly clear throughout the Scriptures.
Jeremiah 3:15 (NKJV) “And I will give you shepherds according to My heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.”
A pastor cares about what Jesus cares about. He loves God, loves people, and desires God’s glory above all. Because of the grace and love you have received, you become a vessel of that love to others.
Your closeness to Jesus will shape your attitude toward people. A pastor who is walking with Jesus will not be harsh, bitter, or self-focused. Instead, you will reflect His kindness, compassion, and patience.
1 Peter 5:2–4 (NKJV) “Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.”
Your life is an example to those you lead.
The congregation needs a pastor who is approachable and caring. They need to know they can come to you when they are struggling, and that you will pray with them, encourage them, and point them to Jesus.
It’s also important to take time to notice those who serve behind the scenes, such as those answering phones, cleaning, preparing food, or caring for children. A kind word and a moment of prayer can strengthen those who quietly serve.
You have the privilege of creating a culture in your church that feels safe, joyful, and welcoming. Let your ministry be a place where people find hope and rest from life’s pressures, a place where they know they are loved and valued. Be friendly. Be fully present. Be considerate. Please keep your eyes open for new people and take the time to welcome them.
The heart of Jesus is seen in how you lead, serve, and interact with others. Your attitude and compassion reflect your closeness to Him. When you lead with a pastor’s heart born of the Holy Spirit, people will sense the love of Jesus flowing through your words and actions.
Love His people well. Let your life reflect the heart of Jesus as you serve Him and His church.
